New dynamic subgrid-scale modelling approaches for large eddy simulation and resolved statistical geometry of wall-bounded turbulent shear flow
This dissertation consists of two parts, i.e. dynamic approaches for subgrid-scale (SGS) stress modelling for large eddy simulation and advanced assessment of the resolved scale motions related to turbulence geometrical statistics and topologies. The numerical simulations are based on turbulent Couette flow.
The first part of the dissertation presents four contributions to the development of dynamic SGS models. The conventional integral type dynamic localization SGS model is in the form of a Fredholm integral equation of the second kind. This model is mathematically consistent, but demanding in computational cost. An efficient solution scheme has been developed to solve the integral system for turbulence with homogeneous dimensions. Current approaches to the dynamic two-parameter mixed model (DMM2) are mathematically inconsistent. As a second contribution, the DMM2 has been optimized and a modelling system of two integral equations has been rigorously obtained. The third contribution relates to the development of a novel dynamic localization procedure for the Smagorinsky model using the functional variational method. A sufficient and necessary condition for localization is obtained and a Picard's integral equation for the model coefficient is deduced. Finally, a new dynamic nonlinear SGS stress model (DNM) based on Speziale's quadratic constitutive relation [J. Fluid Mech., 178, p.459, 1987] is proposed. The DNM allows for a nonlinear anisotropic representation of the SGS stress, and exhibits a significant local stability and flexibility in self-calibration.
In the second part, the invariant properties of the resolved velocity gradient tensor are studied using recently developed methodologies, i.e. turbulence geometrical statistics and topology. The study is a posteriori based on the proposed DNM, which is different than most of the current a priori approaches based on experimental or DNS databases. The performance of the DNM is further validated in terms of its capability of simulating advanced geometrical and topological features of resolved scale motions. Phenomenological results include, e.g. the positively skewed resolved enstrophy generation, the alignment between the vorticity and vortex stretching vectors, and the pear-shape joint probability function contour in the tensorial invariant phase plane. The wall anisotropic effect on these results is also examined
Covering Grassmannian Codes: Bounds and Constructions
Grassmannian is the set of all -dimensional subspaces
of the vector space Recently, Etzion and Zhang introduced a
new notion called covering Grassmannian code which can be used in network
coding solutions for generalized combination networks. An
- covering Grassmannian code is a
subset of such that every set of codewords of

In this paper, we derive new upper and lower bounds on the
size of covering Grassmannian codes. These bounds improve and extend the
parameter range of known bounds.Comment: 17 page
RecolorNeRF: Layer Decomposed Radiance Fields for Efficient Color Editing of 3D Scenes
Radiance fields have gradually become a main representation of media.
Although its appearance editing has been studied, how to achieve
view-consistent recoloring in an efficient manner is still under explored. We
present RecolorNeRF, a novel user-friendly color editing approach for the
neural radiance fields. Our key idea is to decompose the scene into a set of
pure-colored layers, forming a palette. By this means, color manipulation can
be conducted by altering the color components of the palette directly. To
support efficient palette-based editing, the color of each layer needs to be as
representative as possible. In the end, the problem is formulated as an
optimization problem, where the layers and their blending weights are jointly
optimized with the NeRF itself. Extensive experiments show that our
jointly-optimized layer decomposition can be used against multiple backbones
and produce photo-realistic recolored novel-view renderings. We demonstrate
that RecolorNeRF outperforms baseline methods both quantitatively and
qualitatively for color editing even in complex real-world scenes.Comment: To appear in ACM Multimedia 2023. Project website is accessible at

Time-Dependent Pricing for Bandwidth Slicing under Information Asymmetry and Price Discrimination
Due to the bursty nature of Internet traffic, network service providers (NSPs) are forced to expand their network capacity in order to meet the ever-increasing peak-time traffic demand, which is however costly and inefficient. How to shift the traffic demand from peak time to off-peak time is a challenging task for NSPs. In this paper, we study the implementation of time-dependent pricing (TDP) for bandwidth slicing in software-defined cellular networks under information asymmetry and price discrimination. Congestion prices indicating real-time congestion levels of different links are used as a signal to motivate delay-tolerant users to defer their traffic demands. We formulate the joint pricing and bandwidth demand optimization problem as a two-stage Stackelberg leader-follower game. Then, we investigate how to derive the optimal solutions under the scenarios of both complete and incomplete information. We also extend the results from the simplified case of a single congested link to the more complicated case of multiple congested links, where price discrimination is employed to dynamically adjust the price of each congested link in accordance with its real-time congestion level. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed pricing scheme achieves superior performance in increasing the NSP's revenue and reducing the peak-to-average traffic ratio (PATR).This work was supported in part by the National Natural Science Foundation of China under Grant Number 61971189, the Science and Technology Project of State Grid Corporation of China under Grant Number SGSDDK00KJJS1900405, the Exploration Project of State Key Laboratory of Alternate Electrical Power System with Renewable Energy Sources (North China Electric Power University) under Grant Number LAPS2019-12, the Fundamental Research Funds for the Central Universities under Grant Number 2020MS001, and the National Key R&D Program of China under Grant Number 2019YFB1704702. A van der Waals pn heterojunction with organic/inorganic semiconductors
van der Waals (vdW) heterojunctions formed by two-dimensional (2D) materials
have attracted tremendous attention due to their excellent electrical/optical
properties and device applications. However, current 2D heterojunctions are
largely limited to atomic crystals, and hybrid organic/inorganic structures are
rarely explored. Here, we fabricate hybrid 2D heterostructures with p-type
dioctylbenzothienobenzothiophene (C8-BTBT) and n-type MoS2. We find that
few-layer C8-BTBT molecular crystals can be grown on monolayer MoS2 by vdW
epitaxy, with pristine interface and controllable thickness down to monolayer.
The operation of the C8-BTBT/MoS2 vertical heterojunction devices is highly
tunable by bias and gate voltages between three different regimes: interfacial
recombination, tunneling and blocking. The pn junction shows diode-like
behavior with rectifying ratio up to 105 at the room temperature. Our devices
also exhibit photovoltaic responses with power conversion efficiency of 0.31%
and photoresponsivity of 22mA/W. With wide material combinations, such hybrid
2D structures will offer possibilities for opto-electronic devices that are not
possible from individual constituents.Comment: 16 pages, 4 figure
Initial Velocity Effect on Acceleration Fall of a Spherical Particle through Still Fluid
A spherical particle’s acceleration fall through still fluid was investigated analytically and experimentally using the Basset-Boussinesq-Oseen equation. The relationship between drag coefficient and Reynolds number was studied, and various parameters in the drag coefficient equation were obtained with respect to the small, medium, and large Reynolds number zones. Next, some equations were used to derive the finite fall time and distance equations in terms of certain assumptions. A simple experiment was conducted to measure the fall time and distance for a spherical particle falling through still water. Sets of experimental data were used to validate the relationship between fall velocity, time, and distance. Finally, the initial velocity effect on the total fall time and distance was discussed with different terminal Reynolds numbers, and it was determined that the initial velocity plays a more important role in the falling motion for small terminal Reynolds numbers than for large terminal Reynolds number scenarios
Secure and Efficient Vehicle-to-Grid Energy Trading in Cyber Physical Systems: An Integration of Blockchain and Edge Computing
Smart grid has emerged as a successful application of cyber-physical systems in the energy sector. Among numerous key technologies of the smart grid, vehicle-to-grid (V2G) provides a promising solution to reduce the level of demand-supply mismatch by leveraging the bidirectional energy-trading capabilities of electric vehicles. In this paper, we propose a secure and efficient V2G energy trading framework by exploring blockchain, contract theory, and edge computing. First, we develop a consortium blockchain-based secure energy trading mechanism for V2G. Then, we consider the information asymmetry scenario, and propose an efficient incentive mechanism based on contract theory. The social welfare optimization problem falls into the category of difference of convex programming and is solved by using the iterative convex-concave procedure algorithm. Next, edge computing has been incorporated to improve the successful probability of block creation. The computational resource allocation problem is modeled as a two-stage: 1) Stackelberg leader-follower game and 2) the optimal strategies are obtained by using the backward induction approach. Finally, the performance of the proposed framework is validated via numerical results and theoretical analysis
Mass spectrometric and first principles study of AlC clusters
We study the carbon-dope aluminum clusters by using time-of-flight mass
spectrum experiments and {\em ab initio} calculations. Mass abundance
distributions are obtained for anionic aluminum and aluminum-carbon mixed
clusters. Besides the well-known magic aluminum clusters such as Al
and Al, AlC cluster is found to be particularly stable among
those AlC clusters. Density functional calculations are performed to
determine the ground state structures of AlC clusters. Our results show
that the AlC is a magic cluster with extremely high stability, which
might serve as building block of the cluster-assembled materials.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figure
